Clinical Laboratory Science – BS
MLT to MLS
Medical laboratory scientists (also known as clinical laboratory scientists or medical technologists) provide diagnostic test results that directly impact patient care.
The online MLT to MLS program is intended as a bridge for certified Medical Lab Technicians (MLTs) who are working and want to complete a Bachelor’s in Clinical (Medical) Laboratory Science.
Applying is a 2-step process:*
- The Clinical Laboratory Science program application is due by the posted deadline.
Students begin each spring term. - You must also apply to ECU.
Professional Duties Include:
- Identifying normal and abnormal blood cells
- Culturing and identifying microbial pathogens
- Processing blood products for transfusion
- Performing biochemical tests for metabolic diseases
- Interpreting laboratory test results
- Operating laboratory instrumentation
- Ensuring test accuracy through quality control/quality assurance practices
- Advancing to supervisory or managerial positions with experience
Career Options
Upon graduation, most medical laboratory scientists (MLS) begin their career in an acute care or community hospital. They may be a generalist and work in all laboratory sections, or primarily work in a specific area such as hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, or transfusion services.
Employment Outlook
Job growth for medical laboratory personnel is projected at 11% over the next ten years according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The BS in Health Information Management (HIM) emphasizes the development of skills for managing health information and the systems that collect, store, retrieve, disseminate, and communicate said information to support organizational operations and clinical and business decision making. The curriculum is designed to help students develop the knowledge and tools necessary to become effective and efficient leaders in HIM.
Upon completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

Health Services Management – BS
The BS in Health Services Management provides health care practitioners and others with the skills and competencies to function as supervisors and managers in health care settings. Graduates will be prepared for mid-level management positions or for entrance into master’s programs in health and business administration, and public health.
Typical work settings for graduates include hospitals, ambulatory care centers, long term care facilities, health research and clinical trials firms, and home health care agencies.

Rehabilitation Services – BS
The Bachelor of Science degree in Rehabilitation Services prepares entry-level human service personnel for careers in substance abuse, mental health, vocational rehabilitation, and other allied health professions. Working successfully with individuals who have life challenges including physical and/or mental disabilities and substance use disorders requires good communication skills, a strong interest in helping others, flexibility, creativity, a willingness to participate as a treatment team member, and strong leadership skills.
Core content in the major includes effective interviewing, interpersonal, and helping skills; introduction to the case management process; information on alcohol and drug use and abuse; basic knowledge of medical, psychological, and social aspects of disability; philosophical and legislative history of rehabilitation services; an introduction to the organizational structure of rehabilitation systems, the rehabilitation process, and related community resources and services.
